Postcard from Glacier National Park

Cute Alert ! Be warned there is a lot of cuteness in those pictures. I spent the last couple days in Montana, near Glacier National Park, photographing wildlife. The babies are born and they are so cute. It was fantastic to see them up close. It was a really short trip and I’m already back in California.

Full moon over the Golden Gate bridge

Full moon over the Golden Gate bridge

Last night, it was going to be full and to rise above the North tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. After looking at the moon position, I did conclude that the moon would be aligned with the top of the tower with the Transamerica tower in the middle of the opening. The image above shows what my vision was. A very unusual hot weather is in effect in San Francisco right now, which meant that it was still in 70s at 9pm last night and there was no chance of fog and clouds to block the view of the moon. The combination of those factors had attracted a large number of photographers on the Marin Headlands, literally I was waiting for moonrise with 12 other photographers. Taking pictures of the moon is a bit tricky. First the moon moves quickly in the sky. Second there is a...

Postcard from Japan: Yudanaka Onsen and Shibu Onsen

Postcard from Japan: Yudanaka Onsen and Shibu Onsen

Yudanaka Onsen is a small mountain town known in Japan for two things: its hot spring and the snow monkey park. There are many hot springs in the Yamanouchi area where Yudanaka is, including the more known Yudanaka Onsen and Shibu Onsen. The Japanese have been enjoying the water from these hot springs for centuries in bath houses. Shibu Onsen has 9 public bath houses (each with its figurine in front) and countless of private ones. The monkeys are the emblem of the area. Monkeys are drawn everywhere: on signs, on hotel logos, even on the manholes for the hot spring water pipes. We were looking for a Japanese style hotel called ryokan for our stay. The best roykan in town is the Kokuya, the hotel is literally on the hot spring source (5 meters away) and offer eggs...

Happy New Year !

Happy New Year !

I’m currently in Japan and we are starting 2014 ahead of almost everybody else. As we entered the new year, I wish that 2014 will bring you health, and of course photographical inspiration. I cannot do anything for your health but I can definitely try to inspire you: I have started this year by visiting Japan and the famous snow monkeys near Nagano (Jigokudani Yaen-Koen). Snow is falling, it’s all white and cold but really nice. Japan took a bit of time for me to enjoy but now I love this country. It was an adventure for us to drive on our own to the snow monkeys park (driving on the left, with road signs in a different alphabet, I really do not recommend it unless you are an experience left-side driver and you know some basic Japanese). We are...

Postcard from Portland

Postcard from Portland

We spent a very short weekend in Portland last month (already, time flies). It was supposed to be a break from this crazy year of photography. I took and kept more images in the first 6 months of 2013 than I did in all 2012 (my highest photo count on record). So the trip to Portland was just to enjoy the city. The short answer is I fell in love with Portland! It’s a city where you don’t need a car (amazing in the US), public transportation is top notch, bike paths and bikes are everywhere. Did you know that 8% of portlanders commute to work by bike every day! If you go up on some hills around Portland, you get a great view of the city and if the weather is nice, you can even see Mount Hood (50 miles away). During our weekend, we happened to get to a...
