Porsche Rennsport Reunion (5th edition) – part 2
This is my second Rennsport and I was very exited to go back this year with a better access. The theme of this reunion was “Legends of Le Mans”. Most Le Mans Porsche winning cars were on display and racing around the track. If you are interested in the racing portion, check out the first part of this blog. In this second part, I will focus on showing you the most incredible cars I have seen and also how close we could get to them. This is a panoramic view of Laguna Seca during Rennsport V. Over 57000 fans came to see 1820 street and race cars. Porsche A.G, the Porsche Museum and private collectors (like Bruce Canepa or Jerry Seinfeld) brought historical cars that are rarely seen all together. Among them was significant cars that have won Le Mans. I...
Porsche Rennsport Reunion (5th edition) – part 1
The Porsche Rennsport Reunion 5th edition (in short Rennsport V) is a gathering of everything that has raced made by Porsche. It includes race cars and drivers, collector vehicles, historic models. This is the 5th edition since 2001 and the second one in Laguna Seca. The title Rennsport was drawn, quite simply, from the German term for “racing.” So the first thing you notice when you arrive at Laguna Seca is noise. There are cars racing! Saturday we watched the Gmund Cup composed of Porsche 550, 550A, RSK, RS60-61 (4&8 cyl.) 2000 GSGT (Dreikantschaber), Abarth Carrera, 356, 904-4cam and Porsche specials The second race was the Eifel Trophy for 911 (911 up to 2.5 liter), 911TR, 911ST, 914, 914/6. It was a wonderful sight to have early 911 racing around...
Short Trip series: Weekend at Stinson Beach and Bolinas
After going south to Channel Islands National Park, this short trip will take out not far from San Francisco to Stinson Beach and Bolinas. If you leave in the Bay Area, you have probably been driving to Stinson Beach but the town is very different if you can actually stay there! I knew of Stinson Beach before this trip but I was interested in experiencing the early morning when the day trip folks are not yet there. I found a great rental property about 50ft from the beach. There are literally tons of short term rentals in Stinson or Bolinas, a quick search on AirBnb will let you find the one you like. If you have never been in this area, I would recommend going first to Point Reyes but this blog is purely focused on the Stinson Beach area (and Bolinas). Ours was...
Exhibit at the San Mateo Main Library
I just came back from installing my new exhibit at the San Mateo Main Library. It’s always an honor and pleasure to exhibit at the library. The library is open: Monday: 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Tuesday: 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Wednesday: 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Thursday: 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Friday: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Sunday: 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm The exhibit will stay until October 26th. Short trip series: Channel islands National Park from the Bay Area.
From San Francisco, Channel islands National Parks is relatively close and can be done in a 3-day weekend. Channel Islands is not very popular because it’s relatively hard to get to and most of the features require to dive to see them. There are about 30,000 visitors a year that actually go to the islands and another 60,000 that simply dive there. The reward is well worse the trouble, it’s not frequently that you can hike in a National Park in California and not being crowded. The park is composed of five islands (Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, Anacapa and Santa Barbara), all are open to the public except the island of San Miguel which is currently closed. With a little bit of planning before your trip you can secure a camping spot and a place on...
Ethiopia – Erta Ale
One of our main reasons for going to the Ethiopia was to see the semi-permanent lava lake at night on the Erta Ale. Erta Ale is about 600 meters high and is located near the north east of Ethiopia. It’s actually very close to the law-less country Eritrea. It is notable for holding the longest-existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century (1906). Volcanoes with lava lakes are very rare: there are only six in the world (Erta Ale, Ethiopia – Ambrym, Vanuatu – Mount Erebus, Ross Island, Antarctica – Kīlauea, Big Island, Hawaii [there are actually two in Hawaii: Halemaʻumaʻu and Pu’u O’o craters] – Mount Nyiragongo, Democratic Republic of the Congo). The largest one is the Nyiragongo but is now...
